Free Divorce Resource Directory

Updated: Nov 24

I started my divorce at a very low point in my life. My identity and self-worth had crumbled, and I didn't think I had any option but to stay in an abusive marriage. Not always knowing where to turn, I fell down a rabbit hole of podcasts, YouTubes, teachers, therapists, online support groups, and books: each guiding me as I inched along.

Without realizing it, I had amassed a "scrapbook" of favorite resources that helped me navigate the divorce with more clarity and confidence. I also kept meeting women going through (nearly exactly) the same thing, and every single one offered recommendations for what was helping them.

So, this is my offering of gratitude. This is the resource I wish I had been handed on day one. It's my way of saying THANK YOU to every woman who helped me reach this point and KEEP GOING to every woman just starting.

Please view this free divorce resource directory as direction rather than instruction. It's not a blueprint or professional advice because I'm not a doctor, therapist, counselor, teacher, guru, or influencer. I'm simply a single mom navigating this as best as I can, gathering breadcrumbs of wisdom along the way.

**Submissions, FAQ & Support this Project

  • SUBMIT your suggestions to laura@onmessage.co, and I'll review each one (and respond to you either way). I'll update the directory regularly and as time permits. THANK YOU to the 40+ women who have already contributed ideas for this directory!

  • SUPPORT: Healing and resilience grow in healthy connections and relationships. My hope and intention are to grow this into a podcast and additional free legal/financial resources (as that seems to be the largest barrier to leaving an abusive marriage). Many women face significant financial barriers to accessing quality support. I'm committed to keeping Shine On Mama a gatekeeping-free, labor of love, and you can support the project by purchasing merch (or buy me a cup of coffee on Venmo: @Laura-Braden).

  • QUESTIONS / IDEAS / FEEDBACK: laura@onmessage.co

  • HAVE YOU USED EVERYTHING IN THE DIRECTORY? Over 40 women have contributed (THANK YOU), and I have reviewed every resource in the directory (and used probably roughly 80% of them). FYI, nearly all of the authors also have YouTubes and podcasts. And lower-cost books can be found at your local used bookstore, library, eBay.com, Thriftbooks.com, and online book databases (e.g., bookscouter.com/blog/book-databases). I only link favorites to my Amazon affiliate account to avoid conflicts of interest.

Healing & Letting Go

PODCASTS:

Should I Stay or Should I Go?

I hesitate to include this category because the topic is so personal and unique to each person. These resources helped me make an informed and intentional choice, and yet, it still took another year and two failed attempts before I finally left. Only you can make this choice, and in my experience, you'll know when you know. Take your time and then own your decision.

Supporting a Loved One Through Divorce

When your best friend marries an asshole that treats her terribly, what do you do? When your friend calls you sobbing because she wants to leave her marriage, what do you do? When your bestie leaves and is struggling to rebuild her life, what do you do?

Resources are sparse, so we'll dedicate several podcast episodes to this topic. If anyone has books, podcasts, articles, etc., that helped them support a friend through divorce, please share them with me at laura@onmessage.co
